Resumo:Este trabalho de síntese acerca da história da alveitaria portuguesa medieval assenta essencialmente em duas bases.Desde logo,compreender a importância do cavalo enquanto companheiro leal,meio de transporte,máquina de guerra e símbolo social,em torno do qual girou desde a pré-história o interesse dos Homens.Em seguida,analisar o peso que a arte de criar e manter cavalos teve desde o advento da época histórica,sendo coligida em códigos e tratados que teriam uma difusão,podemos dizê-lo, mundial.A este processo não ficaram alheios gentis-homens e físicos oriundos dessa finisterra europeia e ibérica tornada Portugal em meados do século XII,região em guerra permanente, dedicando-se à exclusivamente peninsular Alveitaria.Procura-se assim,actualizando o tema à luz das mais recentes referências nacionais e internacionais no campo da história da Idade Média, evocar a gesta da alveitaria medieval em Portugal.

Summary: This paper is about the history of the medieval Portuguese farriery (alveitaria)and is focused essentially on two issues:to understand the importance of the horse as true companion,transport mean,war machine and social symbol,becoming since pre-historical times a focus of men ’s attention;to comprehend the importance that,since the beginning of historical times,the art of breeding and maintain the health of horses had in ancient codes and treaties that would spread,it is a fact, world wide.Attentive noble-men and physician ’s from the finisterra that in the XII century would become Portugal,a region in continuous war,would dedicate themselves to the exclusively peninsular alveitaria.We seek therefore to evoke the history of medieval Portuguese alveitaria,based on some of the most recent and relevant contributions of the national and international authors of medieval history.
