One of the gross signs of pulmonary oedema is the presence of foamy liquid, sometimes stained with blood, in the lumen of the trachea and bronchi. This foamy liquid is produced when the oedematous fluid mixes with the alveolar surfactant and, subsequently, with inhaled air.
