Faculty of Veterinary Medicine

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Lisbon ranks first nationally and is consolidating its leading position by continuing to climb the international rankings for Veterinary Sciences. In the 2026 edition of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) by ShanghaiRanking, the field of Veterinary Sciences ranks 37th worldwide, reinforcing a trajectory of growth that has been consistently evident in recent years.

The FMV’s progress is particularly evident when looking at its trajectory since 2023: having started in the 51st–75th range, the Faculty has, three years later, reached 37th place worldwide. With each new edition, the ranking has improved, reinforcing the international standing of Veterinary Sciences at the University of Lisbon.

This progress reflects an increasingly consolidated international presence of the research carried out at the FMV and highlights the continuity of the scientific work undertaken by the Faculty, against a backdrop of growing competition amongst institutions worldwide.

The rise in the Shanghai Ranking is therefore not merely a one-off improvement in ranking. It is the result of a sustained trajectory of international recognition, with the FMV progressively closing the gap on the group of the world’s best-ranked institutions in the field of Veterinary Sciences.

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects assesses the performance of higher education institutions in specific scientific fields, using indicators relating to the quality and volume of scientific output, research impact, academic recognition and international collaboration. The data used is based, amongst other sources, on bibliometric information from Web of Science and InCites.

For the FMV, this result constitutes recognition of the quality, consistency and impact of the research produced at the Faculty, as well as its growing visibility on the international scientific scene.

The ranking achieved in 2026 thus reaffirms the FMV’s path towards internationalisation and scientific excellence and highlights a trend that has remained consistent over time.
